I went on a Self-Drive Trip from Chennai to Pondicherry over the long weekend. Road Trip from Chennai to Pondicherry is one of the Best Road Trip of India. Also, it is one of the best way to explore Union Territory of India, Pondicherry.

Pondicherry is well-known for it’s French Colony also known as White Town. Walking through those street and visiting some cafes in White Town was relaxing. White Town is one of the unique spot of Pondicherry and it is main attraction of this union territory.

Pondicherry Itinerary for 2 days is as follow:

Day 1:

It is better to arrive a day prior to Pondicherry to dedicate a whole 2 days to see tourist places in Pondicherry. We arrived to Pondicherry on Day 0 from Chennai via ECR Road which took around 3 hours to reach the city.

First day we spent walking around White Town, French Colony of Pondicherry. Walking around White Town was indeed fun as we passed through colorful walls and clicked some amazing pictures. Within White Town, we first visit  Manakula Vinayagar Temple, an ancient Hindu Temple of Lord Ganesha. None of the Journey starts without the blessing of Lord Ganesh.

Fun Fact: The Chariot within Manakula Vinayagar Temple is made of Pure Gold with weight of 7.5 kg.

Outside temple, we found many street shopping vendors for some roadside shopping, however, ensure to bargain on the price. Next to the temple is Sri Aurobindo Aashram, founded by Sri Auriobindo Ghose, is a spiritual community. People from different countries come and stay in the Aashram to seek spirituality. As a visitor, you can visit the Aashram for meditation within the pemises.

Moving on in our walking tour of White Town, we reached Pondicherry Museum. In Pondicherry Museum, you will find artifacts from Roman period.

Fun Fact: Pondicherry Museum has display of 1000 year old intricate bronze sculptures from Chola Empire.

As we move towards the beach side, on our way, we visited Immaculate Conception Cathedral known as Mother Church for Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry. It is one of the oldest and beautiful church in Pondicherry.

If you wish to shop around Pondicherry, you will find many boutique shops in White Town which might be bit expensive. However, if you want the local market experience then head over to Goubert Market. On Sunday’s, there are local Sunday Market for some street side shopping experience.

In the evening, we headed to Promenade and spent golden hour of sunset on Rock Beach. Promenade connects White Town and has many cafes and restaurants over looking the beach. The beach near Promenade area is called Rock Beach and it is one of the famous beach in Pondicherry.

For those who wish to do more sightseeing in the Promenade, you can visit Our Lady of Angels Church and do photo-stop at Mahatma Gandhi Statue.

Day 2:

Pondicherry comes on the East side of India. While you are in Pondicherry, don’t miss the Sunrise. We went to Paradise Beach witness Sunrise. Apart from Paradise Beach, you can also head to Serenity Beach for the similar experience.

After breakfast, we headed to Auroville Town. Auroville is a town formed outside Pondicherry where one can stay to find themselves. It is a place where everyone is equal whether it is their job or caste. Auroville is a universal town founded by The Mother with the vision from Sri Aurobindu. It was inspire to create a place for human to live with spirituality, peace and harmony.

As a visitor, you are not allowed to visit the town but take a look around visitor centre to know more about their vision and mission. There are video documentary showcasing the formation of Matrimandir. You can also take a short walk to see Matrimandir from outside. One can meditate inside Matrimandir which is a huge dome structure.

Apart from visiting the Auroville Town, you also have options to eat at various cafes located near the town and some street shopping as well. Trip to Auroville Town will take a half day. Later in the day, you can again head back to Promenade or beaches on the stretch.

Pondicherry is located in the South India in Tamil Nadu State. It is hot during the summers and monsoon. Best Time is during winters as weather is more pleasant. Ideal Time to visit Pondicherry is from October-March.  Even during summers and monsoon, you can relax during afternoon and step out in the evening for nice breezy wheather.

Is 2 days enough for Pondicherry?

If you can looking at weekend trip then yes, 2 days enough for Pondicherry. If you are planning to do water adventure and visit many places around Pondicherry or even want more relaxation, then you can stay for longer duration. How expensive is Pondicherry?

Pondicherry is for kinds of traveller, from budget trip to expensive trip, you can do all. At less cost, Honestays and Hostels are available. Similarly, Pondicherry also has expensive hotels for luxury experiences. Same goes for eating places aroun Pondicherry. Cafe tends to be more expensive compare to local restaurants.

Night life in Pondicherry?

Pondicherry has many cafes and bars which are open till 11 till mid-night. Some are beach facing giving amazing vibes to the place. Promenade is where you can enjoy night life. However, if you are comparing with Goa, then no. Pondicherry doesn’t have vibrant night life like Goa.

What is Pondicherry known for?

French Colony of Pondicherry is very famous and a landmark for travellers. Pondicherry is rich in culture which is mixture of French with Tamilian. You can find a influence of Franch in food and architecture merged with Tamilian culture.

Where to stay in Pondicherry?

If you are visiting Pondicherry to experience the French Colony then opt for stay in White Town as majority of the sightseeing is located in that area. Whereas, if you want to relax by the beach and pool in the resort, then opt for Beach Resorts which are away from the main town area (White Town).

Transportation in Pondicherry?

Pondicherry has local transportation service available like Rickshaw, Auto and Bus. However, Best way to roam around in the city is by hiring Bike or Scooter. If you intend to do road trip, then hire a car from Chennai. From traveling in rickshaw, ensure to bargain the price as they do not have meter system.
