Road Trip from Chennai to Pondicherry

We had heard a lot about the scenic Road Trip from Chennai to Pondicherry, hence decided to go self-drive trip. The distance between Chennai & Pondicherry is approximately 150 kms and it takes around 3 hours to cover the distance. However, we took whole day and visited two attractions on the way.

Both the road journey and the roads are truly majestic with beautiful viewing spots surrounding you to the scenic sea shores and beautiful halt spaces, the journey had it all.

East Coast Road connects Chennai and Pondicherry and is surrounded by Bay of Bengal on one side and on the other side, you will find lakes and farms.

First Stop

In our Road Trip from Chennai to Pondicherry is Madras Crocodile Bank. Though not a lot of people know about it. The centre is the biggest crocodile sanctuary in India. You get to see many species of Crocodile, Aligator, Turtle and Snake.

Fun Fact: The centre has one of the world’s largest collections of crocodiles and alligators and has bred 5,000 crocodiles and alligators representing 14 of the 23 existing species

The centre also has Komodo Dragon. You will be astonished to see the sheer variety & volumes of crocodile & snakes in the park.

They also have one of the only approved snake venom extraction centres in India. You can pay extra to see the snake venom extraction show.

Second Stop

Conitnung on our journey, next stop was in the town of Mahabalipuram. We visited to one of the ancient temple in South India, Shore Temple. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and oldest Temple in India.

Fun Fact: Shore Temple is  UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and one of the oldest structural stone temples of South India

Location of Shore Temple is very beautiful, right on the edge of Sea, the temple structure is standing strong since many years. If you have more time and weather is suitable, you can also visit Mahabalipuram Beach which is just next to the temple.

The ECR road from Chennai to Pondicherry is one of the most scenic route in India and comes in Top 10 Road Trips in India.

The journey can be done in one day, rather 3 hours. With stopover, you can take whole day. If you wish to spend moe than, you can stay in mahabalipuram and spread the journey over 2 days.

The drive through won’t cost more than INR 5000-7000. If you wish to spend more time with stay in Mahabalipuram, it should cost approximately INR 10,000-15,000.

What to pack?

For the road trip, lot of enthusiam and camera. Weather in Chennai and Pondicherry is tropical, hence, carry sunscreen and glasses. Carry enough water for the road journey, but do stop in between at local store for some coconut water.
