2 Nights Sasan Gir National Park Itinerary

2 Nights Sasan Gir National Park itinerary for your perfect weekend trip in Gujarat. Gir National Park is the national park located in Gujarat state. It is the only national park where you get to see the asiatic lion.

Gir National Park is located in an area called Sasan, hence, it is named as Sasan Gir National Park. If you are driving from Ahmedabad, there will be a part of road trip which goes through the forest. Roads are not very good so be prepared to have a bump ride. You can see the entire road journey on Eat Travel Fun Gir National Park Video.

Gir National Park was created to save the population of asiatic lions which was depreciating over the years. It is now a national park and wildlife sanctuary in the state Gujarat. The population of lion is divided between Gir and Devalia national park.

Here is 2 Nights Sasan Gir National Park Itinerary:

Day 1: Reaching Sasan Gir National Park

Whether you are coming through air or road, the first half of Day 1 will go in reaching the national park. Once you reach, checkin to your hotel for relax afternoon. In the evening, head to either Gir national park or Devalia park for your safari.

Post safari, spend your evening roaming the local streets of Sasan for shopping and dinner. Must visit in Sasan market a shop of the artist Art of Gir where the artist creates the art with threat and needle. Apart from the art, you can buy Mango pulp made from Mangoes from Sasan or a souvenir t-shirt with lion print on them.

Day 2: Gir National Park

Start your early morning with safari in the Gir National Park. Gir National Park is bigger in size and does have good amount of lion population, however, sighteeing of lion is not guaranteed. After morning safari, drive inside the forest road to visit Kankai Mata Temple. It is located at the heart of Gir Forest and if you are lucky, you can have amazing animal sighting on your way to the temple.

Since Gujarat is dry state and afternoon can be very hot, it is ideal time to stay in your hotel and have relaxed afternoon. In the evening head to Devalia park to have a guaranteed sighting of Lion as forest area is smaller and population of lion is more.

Depart in the evening or next day morning for a journey back home.

Frequently asked questions about Sasan Gir National Park and Devalia Park.

Closest airport to Gir National Park?

Closest airport to Sasan Gir is in Rajkot. Alternatively, you can also land in Ahmedabad and do a road trip to Gir National Park. Road journey from Ahmedabad to Sasan Gir is around 7-8 hours.

What is Devalia Park?

Devalia park is a small park created in Gir forest for lions and leopards to stay. It is smaller in size and has more population of lions. It is very confined area and even pathways for vehicle is created making it feel more like zoo safari instead forest safari. Devalia offers jeep as well as bus safari. Sightings are guaranteed as in an area of 600 km, there are around 10 lions.

Gir National park or Devalia Park?

If your objective is to have lion sighting and not the feel of safari, then head for Devalia. If you are looking for an authentic safari experience and are ok with zero lion sighting then head for Gir Safari. The jeep of Devalia is fully covered giving you a feel of caged safari whereas jeep in Gir is open jeep and has proper feel of forest safari.

How many safari’s to book for good lion sighting?

If you are opting for Devalia then 1 is enough. If you plan to go to Gir then minimum 2 for more probability of lion sighting.

Which safari time is ideal for lion sighting?

They say that morning is always better for animal sighting and first preference for any safari lover will be to go for morning. However, sunset and evenings as different feel in the forest, but sighting can be less.

Best time to visit Gir?

Gir is closed in the monsoon from June-October. Winters are the best month in terms of weather and temperature, however, sightings in summers are more as forest becomes drier and due to short length of trees.

Where to stay in Sasan Gir?

Sasan offers all types of accommodation, from luxury resort to budget property. You can opt for stay based on your budget.

Transportation in Sasan Gir?

Most of the hotels offer airport/railway transfers. There are local taxi’s available. Safari’s generally will have pick up from the hotel or hotels offer drop to safari gate. Personally, I prefer to have your own car for ease of traveling.

Unlike national parks in the other part of the country, Gir offers a peak into the dry forest and nature in its rawest form.
